INDUSTRIAL ROPE ACCESS AS A WORKING METHOD
Industrial rope access is a method of working that allows safe work at height and confined spaces and was originally developed from techniques used in caving. The first industrial use of rope access came about in the 1980’s. The oil rigs in the North Sea required working methods to do things quicker, more flexible and safer than what was the case when scaffolds were used. Innovative workers questioned the logic in building scaffolds as soon as work had to be done at a hard-to-reach location. The solution became and still is industrial rope access.
Since the development of industrial rope access during the mid 1980’s a steadily increasing number of industries have turned to industrial rope access firms to get the job done not only offshore but also onshore. More and more industries discover the advantages with industrial rope access and today it is used for everything from window cleaning on skyscrapers to NDT inspections of bridges. The development of the industry is driven by the international trade association IRATA.
To work according to the standards developed by IRATA means working according to standards that provide unrivalled safety. To learn more about IRATA click here.
Pioneers in the Swedish rope access industry
In Sweden, industrial rope access was introduced in 1997 when Rope Access Sweden was founded. Today an increasing number of customers discover the advantages that industrial rope access offers them. By using rope access for inspection, installation and maintenance at height and confined spaces customers gain advantages such as:
- Lower costs for inspection, installation and maintenance as work can be done in shorter time without scaffolds and sky lifts
- Fewer and shorter shutdowns as industrial rope access minimizes disruptions
- High safety for staff and third party
- Minimal damage to buildings/constructions as the ropes and harnesses used leave no marks
